
Noor Alexandria Abukaram is a senior at The Bounty Collegium, a non-traditional high-school that challenges students to identify their passions. Noor’s passion consists of fashion design and sports, including soccer, track, and cross country, where she challenges herself to push barriers and pursue new opportunities. She currently plays soccer and runs track and cross country for Sylvania Northview Highschool.
During a cross country meet in the 2019 Cross Country season, Noor was disqualified for wearing the hijab after running her personal best.
She has become known to the world after the global Media had published about her: ‘Muslim teen disqualified from cross country race for wearing a hijab’.
Noor decided to speak out and make a statement about the discrimination she experienced, which garnered national uproar. Her experience was featured on The Washington Post, The New York Times, Good Morning America, Time Magazine, AJ+, CNN, BBC, USA Today, Sports Illustrated and ESPN. Noor then launched a campaign titled ‘Let Noor Run’ to defeat discrimination within Sports. Noor also advocated for a Bill in Ohio to allow student religious expression in extracurricular activities. The bill unanimously passed through the committee.
